When I was a law student, I believed that becoming an attorney, an advocate, or maybe a law lecturer, were the onlycareer paths available to me.
And I don’t blame any law student who thinks the same. That’s often the only narrative we hear in lectures, career fairs, or from those already in practice.
But here’s the truth: the law opens doors to many exciting and fulfilling careers , both within and far beyond traditional legal practice. The moment you start researching, networking, and engaging with diverse professionals, you’ll discover that your degree is far more versatile than you imagined.

While a law degree opens doors to an array of professional opportunities, many graduates are unaware of the full breadth of careers available to them – especially beyond traditional practice.
Too often, law students and early-career professionals are led to believe their only viable paths are in litigation or corporate law. The reality is that a BA Law, BCom Law, or LLB degree can unlock limitless options, from practising attorney roles to high-impact non-practising positions in business, technology, compliance, human rights, policy development, and more.
Our aim is to expand awareness of the (i) spectrum of traditional and non-traditional career opportunities in the legal field; (ii) Provide guidance for career transitions, including moving from practising to non-practising roles; (iii) Bridge the gap between academic training and professional success and (iii) Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal industry.
This year we are collaborating with SMA, an award-winning career development and mentorship platform dedicated to helping law students, graduates, and early-career legal professionals bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application. SMA has worked with hundreds of law students and graduates nationwide, directly contributing to their securing of articles, clerkships, vacation work, and graduate programme placements at leading law firms
